Hideki Togi
Gagaku Master
Born in Tokyo in 1959. The Togi family has been practicing Gagaku for 1300 years since the Nara period. Due to his father's work, he spent his childhood abroad and grew up absorbing all genres of music. In 1996, he made his debut with the album “Hideki Togi”. He has received numerous awards, including the Japan Record Award for Planning, the Gold Disc Award for Pure Japanese Music Album of the Year, and the 2004 Art Encouragement Prize for New Artist from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. He holds concerts both in Japan and abroad, and is passionate about his unique expression that makes the most of the unique qualities of the gagaku instrument. In 2021, he will celebrate the 25th anniversary of his debut, and is actively collaborating with various artists in different fields, aiming for even more extreme performance. On March 29, 2023, he released his long-awaited new album “Neo Togism”, a magnificent and golden album based on the theme of “Progressive Gagaku”.
Ikuko Kawai
Violinist / Composer
Born in Kagawa Prefecture. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts and completed the graduate course at the same university. Currently a professor at Osaka University of Arts. She has performed with major orchestras in Japan and abroad, world-class musicians such as conductor Myung-Whun Chung and tenor Jose Carreras, as well as pop artists across genres, ballet dancer Farouk Ruzimatov, Tetsuya Kumagawa. She has performed in Japan and abroad, including successful performances at Carnegie Hall in New York in 2008, the Paris Opera House in 2015, and the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC in 2019. Winner of the Best Music Award at the 36th Japan Academy Awards, she is also highly acclaimed as a composer. She was in charge of the theme for the drama “Kirin ga Kuru”. Her performance at the Tadanori Yokoo Museum of Contemporary Art was distributed worldwide in 2021. As a social activity, she established “Kawai Ikuko Mother Hand Fund”. She is a Goodwill Ambassador for the All Japan Shrine and Temple Tourism Federation and a UNHCR refugee supporter. In 2022, she formed the Japanese-Western Orchestra Hibiki and released the album “Hibiki” in March 2023. The orchestra will perform at New York's Lincoln Center in Sep 2023.
